Time for a Visit to Grand Rapids, Michigan

Filed under: Michigan,Places To Visit — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

After seeing this video, I immediately wanted to hop on a plane to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Throughout the entire video, I was trying to figure out which city it was. I had pretty much decided that it must be Austin, Texas, because they were the coolest city I knew with bridges and a population willing to participate in a video like this.

This is a LONG video (over ten minutes), but it is totally worth it right to the very last minute. Give it a watch:

Wandering West Michigan: Holland Ice Sculpture Competition

When your town gets cold, show them what cold REALLY is: hold an Ice Sculpture Competition! Josh Leo reports on the Ice Sculpture Competition in Holland, Michigan.

I love his questions:

“Have you ever thought about maybe going into a different type of sculpting instead of something where you are constantly freezing your butt off?”

“Well, actually, I prefer cake decorating.”

You can see more of Josh Leo’s videos featuring his home state here:

If you thought traveling to Michigan in the middle of winter would be a bad idea, Josh has a whole bunch of ideas to keep you busy.

What is a Pasty? from Josh Leo

Filed under: Michigan — Laura Moncur @ 3:59 am

Josh Leo’s travel videoblog has a great introduction to a purely Michigan food: pasty. I first heard of pasties in a fiction book set “way north.” It never identified itself as Michigan and I really thought it was set in Canda. Pasties are a meaty pastry dish that was brought from Europe to the United States. It’s a portable kind of food that the miners could bring with them when they had to work at the mines. Josh Leo’s video about them just makes me want to book a flight to Michigan.

Every video episode of Josh Leo’s Wandering West Michigan has made me want to visit the state. If you ever get a chance to head up to north Michigan, eat a pasty for me!

Grand Haven, Michigan: Salmon Festival 2006

Josh Leo is going to take you to the Grand Haven Salmon Festival:

The best advice came from one of the participants when asked how he chooses:

“I look for the long lines.”

Apparently, the fish and wine people with the longest lines have the best food. That makes sense.

I love Josh’s evaluation:

“Meat on a stick. I don’t think there’s anything better in this world.”

Josh invites us all to come next year:

“Come down next year for yourself and enjoy all the awesome salmon and wine craziness that’s going on here in Grand Haven. Yeah, it’s a great time! Good food, good people, good wine: thumbs up all the way around!”

I just love Josh’s reviews of the events in Grand Haven, Michigan. It shows me that no matter where you live, there is something exciting going on to enjoy.

I love the different answers from each person he interviewed about the sculpture. Josh didn’t seem to like the way Gaslight Village turned out, but his video has made me want to visit his town more than ever.
