The Carcamp from Heku
Another interesting camper from German company, Heku, called the Carcamp really lives up to its name.
It sleeps FOUR people, believe it or not and even has a bathroom onboard.
I first found out about the Carcamp from this photo from Flickr from geofones.
I can hardly believe that a tiny camper like this can sleep four. Two sleep in the overhead area.
And two more can sleep on the dinette when it’s folded down.
My biggest wonder is how the camper attaches to the vehicle. Fortunately, Gizmag had some photographs of the hitch attachment.
What you are looking at is a mirror, placed on the ground, displaying how the Carcamp connects to the car. It appears to use a typical 2″ square hitch (but no ball assembly). It just connects directly into the hitch receiver.
In August 2011, dutchurbanminer on YouTube encountered a Heku Carcamp on an Opel GSI and filmed it. The owner was selling it for 13,500 Euro, which is about $18,172.
What interests me is this kitchen setup. You can retract the bed in the overhead area and it creates a swatch of counter space for you.
In August 2009, Newscamptv on YouTube also has a video tour of the Carcamp at the Caravan Salon 2009, and better still, they are able to go inside one.
As you can see from that video, the Carcamp is an incredibly efficient design. If I’m reading the Heku Carcamp website correctly, it is built for an Opel Astra and sells for 22,450 Euro, which is about $30,219.
Sadly, I can’t get an Opel Astra or a Carcamp without importing them into the States, so this option is not possible for me, but it’s great for ideas for building my next tiny trailer.
